Beginner staff moves?

topic posted Thu, November 22, 2007 - 3:37 PM by  Nixi
Hello. I'm new to staff, and I was wondering if there was any place online that could show me how to do some beginning contact staff moves.
I can do the basic twirls, front and back, just fine, I used to twirl flags and batons, so staff has come naturally to me, so far.
I have been looking around online and can't seem to find anything.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
I have two friends who are both amazing at staff, and they can teach me a lot, but I don't see them all that often and I want something that I can watch and learn or whatnot.
Just some free staff tutorials would be nice.

Thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I was wondering how effective do you think these videos are? Someone taught me the real basic moves and I love it! I want to continue learning, I'm just wondering if it's worth buying the staff and all the equipment and then just get a video?

I think learning from vids is pretty effective. Everything I've learned has almost purely been from watching vids. How well has it done me? well, you can check the vids on my profile and judge for yourself. The tradeoff between learning from vids and learning from a teacher is time investment. Working out something your watching on a vid can be difficult and take more time to understand and master than if someone is physically showing you the move. On the upside, there is more of a chance you will stumble into something new and unique while trying to work out a move.

As far as the investment, unless you're spinning for an audience, or specifically spinning fire, then you really don't have to invest much at all. Twirling styled staff can be accomplished with a broom handle that you can pull off an old broom, or any straight stick. Cost = free (or very close to it). If you want to spin fire, then you can go as basic as investing in some aramid fiber (kevlar) wicking, some aluminum tape, a dowel (or broom handle or other sturdy wood stick) and some screws. Potentially under $20 for a usable fire staff.

You can msg me if you have any questions on staff building or need some reference links.

As far as vid resources, the previous links are great and I've got more in my profile. You can also check out my youtube playlist compilations:
            www.youtube.com/profile_play_list

There should be more than plenty enough info to get you well on your way for very little cost.

            Peace,
            - Sui

              Hi Sui,
Thanks so much for all the advise! I think I will start off with the vid and broom handle first. Get my techniques down and then proceed to fire when I'm slick with the movements ;)
I will def check out your you tube site. And I will keep you posted with on my progress.
              Thanks again!

I'd wrap something around the ends of the stick (washcloth taped on with duct tape, etc), which will make it move more like a fire staff... and still basically free.

id like to add that some cheap grip (tennis, golf, baseball) will help so much

grips are nice, too, but at a minimum you should mark the center balance point with tape (so you can see and feel it), it will make early learning easier.

                  Hello there,
I made my makeshift firestaff with a broom handle and some tape to indentify the middle.
I also went ahead and added the washcloths with rubberbands for added weight. So I'm good to go for now! :)

Excellent, I hope you have fun with that. Remember, when practicing, make sure you work on keeping your out to your sides, rather than in front of you. That is, when working with the figure 8, for instance, you should have your hands out to your sides and the staff should pass in front and behind you. I see folks often starting out trying to handle the staff like a sword and hold it out in front of them with the figure 8 passing to each side. It becomes apparent when they try and start to learn transitions.

Obviously it's subjective, but most movements you will graduate to will utilize the staff parallel to your shoulders. So trying to spin it in front of you (staff spinning perpendicular to your shoulders) can hinder your learning and make moves more difficult (and you tend to whack yourself more). Open grip is key too.

                    Peace and enjoy,
                    - Sui

                      Open grip?
Do you mean keeping my hands loose on the staff?

Yup yup.. tight grip is rarely used and can contribute to wrist issues. Generally you'll want to hold the staff between thumb and forefinger or thumb and palm edge, or even forefinger only, with your other fingers used for guiding. Eventually you can get into finger rolls and wrist rolls , but don't worry too much bout that now. Open grip is your friend.

                        Peace,
                        - Sui

some of these links you all posted didn't work or are in a different language. Home of Poi's tuts are ok for rotor and what not, but anything past that is set up pretty bad. Anyone know of a good place that's in english for the very basic moves?

Thanks for posting that. I knew that Imokokode, had posted some tutorials, and I have seen some of his performance vids.
I am certain that I had followed a link to an Imokokode tutorial, and received the "This video has been removed by the user" message.

He was working on an instructional DVD, right?

Has Noelskis DVD been released yet?

So many props, so little time.

                  Yƶ,
I had different options about organising the turorials videos on youtube, cause wanted to do it on 3 languages but didn't want to creat 3 youtube counts for it, then I had to remove somes videos and put it again few hours/days later.
I have no tutorial DVD plan for now, sorry. Meg and Noel are pretty set for that.

I'm hoping to have a vid camera and nice edditing software soon so I can film more of those tutorials.
Happy to see that you guys like it :)

Didn't want this to get burried in the "Beginner staff moves" thread.

When filming for possible DVD usage, leave a bit of room at the bottom of the frame for foreign language subtitles. That is, shoot as you would for dance, not juggling.

Subtitles take up very little DVD room, and you can do several languages easily. Make one of the languages English(!) so that foreign speakers can follow, and so that us A'merkins can understand otherwise impenetrable Scottish and Australian twangs.
