Anyone ever spin just a bigass wooden stick? Or possibly even a faggot of staves? Ever hook a poi onto the end of a wood stick for a makeshift fire stick?

Tue, June 16, 2009 - 7:42 AMI might be building a wooden staff for a friend or two. If so, I'll be using tennis grip and white fluorescent tape to identify the balance points. I started out with a wooden staff without any grips and I certainly would not be able to do the tricks then that I can do now. -

Re: Wooden Stick
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 10:02 AMI used to get really big lag bolts, pre-drill the ends, and out them on with huge washers to add weight to the ends. This is mainly for contact staff, and wouldn't really be helpful for traditional staff. -

Tue, June 16, 2009 - 11:40 AMWell John, you'd THINK that you can't do the same moves, but my ungripped, slippery, un-endweighted rattan staff is absolutely capable of doing any of the tricks that I can do with a weighted, gripped contact staff.
You just have a lower percentage, a wider margin of error, and more precise body movement. Its really fantastic practice for getting your percentage up with your regular staff though, because it by necessity eliminates extraneous movements. Fishtails and tosses in particular can be honed in really well that way. -

Re: Wooden Stick
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 8:03 PMI dunno, I spin with whatever I can get my hands on. I'm not a big fan of wooden sticks, even poorly weighted metal staves (grrr my fire staff) annoy me. I prefer to practice with a well weighted metal staff because many of the techniques that I practice require precision. When it comes down to it, a good staff that behaves as it should is better for learning new tricks in my opinion. I had a lot of trouble with steves before I switched to metal. I've noticed that as my fire staff has degraded steves are once again harder and I have resort to matrixes as an alternative. Which is okay but I like to mix it up with arms rolls and such that require loads of balance. Either way you look at it though, spinning with a giant wooden stick without proper weighting or grip is LOTS OF FUN!!! -

Tue, June 16, 2009 - 8:12 PMNick knows where I stand on this. I got me three metal staves within a year of starting to spin, including a titanium one. Mom used to bowl and she had umpteen bowling balls, a room full of trophies, and one or two perfect games. Whenever she had a slump, she just blamed it on the equipment and bought something newer and shinier . :-)
