You're gonna be at firedrums right? One of the folks I'm traveling with, Michael from Bend (he's in my friends list), is a metalworker and fire tools crafter. I may try and get him to make me a pair. Bliss will be out there with her own set, which I will beg to play with :). I don't imagine you'd want them made of wood for fire. Then again, it is possible that fire will ruin the illusion that the curved staffs create.

The first time I saw them in use was a couple of years ago. A vid from Michael Moschen (the guy who did the contact juggling in Labrynth) from way back in 1991 (so far as I can tell). Here's the link:

First saw MM in the mid 1980s. See also his Moschen in Motion, a PBS video. Available from larger juggling vendors, PBS, and probably Utorrent.

The S-shaped staves might indeed by difficult with fire. But electrolumi wire would preserve the illusion and make them wonderfully visible at night. CoolNeon is the best source and Benny is the most enthusiastic and experienced supplier.

Come to think of it, many of Moschen's shapes would do very well in coolneon. I can envision the upsidedown bent U shape, slowly spinning, far out on the playa. You get closer and it just gets larger and larger, until . . .

I saw some kids and Symbiosis with them with paint that lit up in the black lights, they had several sets with handles in the middle.

As an idea: they covering them with metal tape and stapling wick strips onto it, then wrapping it in wick and using layer or wire between the two layers of wick to hold it down. Kinda vague I know, but a friend gave me a wood staff with the wicks made this way and they really rock and are really light too. Fire might not work well on these things ( the flame might reach up and try to burn your hands since these things pass really close and stay close to your hnads) but its worth a try.

OH yes, we'll be at firedums. Thats awsomem you know of a metal worker in Bend, nice and close to home. We should talk more about making some out of metal.
I like the look of the wood ones, the buugeng.
Ive alsothought about how the fire might take away the illusion that the shape creates, but if it was out of metal and polished pherhaps, it might reflect enought to see it. Either way, i still want a set. : )

    Aaron,

I'm projecting pretty far out here, but we will have them at best pre-BM, at worst pre Wildfire. If you have some specific ideas for your self, we are offering custom-made ones at the moment.
