This will be the fourth annual Firestaff making session at Burning Man. It will begin at 11 am on Tuesday at my camp, Mooncake Rebellion. I will have enough material for 15-20 firestaves. They are contact friendly (i.e. thick wall aluminum) staves that are ready to be lit up when the session is done. 15-20 more firestaffers who know how to make their own staff!
Every year I have to turn people away for lack of materials. So to increase the number of happy customers and you are reading this, please bring the staff material of your choice (I'm a big fan of aluminum- I do NOT recommend steel conduit piping- it is designed to bend=bad), kevlar wick and grip tape. You can make your own staff there at the session. If you have a cordless drill, bring that too.
Oh yeah, all you people who already have a firestaff, come on by and show the newbies your moves.

A big thank you to Trick Concepts.
I will post the location of my camp when it comes out.
Be well. Capt Salamander.

It's a 3/4 inch ali tube with a 1/8 inch wall thickness, meaning I'll be using 1/2 inch doweling on the ends. It seems with self tapping screws there might not be much for them to hang onto... I'm wondering if a bolt all the way through with a nut on it would work well. Either that or drilling into the other side of the tube a little ways. Also the fact that it's 4 feet 6 inches and has 6 inches of kevlar on each side might not be such a good idea, I probably will fold in in half and take off some of the length. Right now with it sitting on my wall with that much kevlar it looks like the scariest stick on the planet. Anyways any advice would be great. Thanks.
I can do the basic twirls, front and back, just fine, I used to twirl flags and batons, so staff has come naturally to me, so far.
I have been looking around online and can't seem to find anything.
When filming for possible DVD usage, leave a bit of room at the bottom of the frame for foreign language subtitles. That is, shoot as you would for dance, not juggling.

Subtitles take up very little DVD room, and you can do several languages on one 60-min DVD quite easily. Make one of the languages English(!) so that foreign speakers can follow, and so that us A'merkins can understand otherwise impenetrable Scottish and Australian twangs.

So this past weekend up at fire drums I spun dozens of times. For just about the entire event, my personal contact breakdown staff was down in the vending area. I didn't get a chance to spin with it once.

Instead, I spun with everyone else's staves. Rif's, Michael's, Maria's, Poje's, Lily's, Aileen's, Ian's, Sage's... I didn't discriminate. I even used some of Jade and Lester's fuzzy staves.

Somehow I managed not to burn myself once. I even landed some moves that I've never done before.

I'm mostly mentioning this because I have been practicing over a year now with irregular shaped staves, sticks, pieces of bamboo, rattan, broomhandles, burls from the beach, or just about anything thats long, heavy, and reasonably straight. I almost never use grip, none of them are end weighted, they're usually off balance, and not really straight at all.

Each one has its own range of movement, and learning all those gave me the ability to spin with just about any stick I came across. If anyone notices that they're unable to get moves to work for them with anything except their perfectly balanced, end weighted, lightweight aluminum piece of machinery, I highly recommend you pick up a piece of eucalyptus or rattan or just a stick on the side of the road and practice with that. You'll get all your moves down tighter, smoother, more fluid, and it will help you to be more versatile in case your stick breaks.

I find myself listening to various songs and imagining what kinds of movements would choreograph well with them, kinda like a mini - fire - staff - spinning - music - video thingy.

THEME CAMPS
We are requesting that all theme camps register and determine the minimum required amount of space that you can fit into. We are also asking most participants to drop their camping gear and park out by the front gate in order to keep the event site open and allow art cars, pedestrian traffic, and bicycles to traverse the site safely. There’s plenty of room on this site for our event, we just have to use it judiciously and creatively. Please please please register your theme camp and art so we know who’s coming!

FIRE
Dark Skies 2008 is operating in a high fire season, and in an area of pristine high desert in a beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. Dark Skies Fire Safety will be operating under the jurisdiction of Meadview Arizona Fire Dept. All final decisions regarding fire will be up to them.

•	Fire performers will be allowed i/e: poi staffs breathers and all other hand held fire performance toys.
•	Small propane flame effects; ie hand held puffers and small lpg flame effects with neither having a vertical flame length exceeding 10ft unless pre approved will be allowed.
•	Fire barrels; fire barrels will be provided and maintained by event staff and will be in community areas.
•	No personal burn barrels and fireplaces unless pre-approved in advance of the event.
•	All generators used will be required to have an abc fire extinguisher and a pointed shovel within 20 ft at all times.
•	Tentative fire times will be between 7pm and sunrise. Fire times will be subject to blackout in case of winds sustained in excess of 12 mph.
•	All fire artists and participants must check in with DSFS. DSFS has the final say when it comes to fire of any kind.
•	Smoking is to be conducted on developed and groomed areas only, no smoking is allowed in the vegetated areas of the event site. Leave no trace; never let it hit the ground.
•	Fireworks of any kind are illegal and banned 100% at this event.
•	All fire activities will be restricted to fire performance areas and then only at pre approved times. We will clearly mark these areas on site.

Important fire information; All fire activities may be banned in the case of a regional “red flag alert”. A red flag alert occurs when high winds regionally create a situation whereby all fire activities are banned. This is not the same as the high fire season ban which runs April 15 – Nov 15 and for which we are applying for variances too for this event. This is also NOT the same situation we had last time where CCFD “stuck it to us” at the last minute and bummed a lot of people out. Our hosts want to see fire at this event. But we have to play by their rules. Lets hope for low winds on the weekend of the event!

VOLUNTEER!
The heart of any regional event is the volunteers, and we love our volunteers! We have limited Volunteer opportunities available for Dark Skies.

Please check the website and the event’s news group which is located here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

Pictures of the new site are here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/pictures/3-08sitesurveyweb/index.htm

The event’s website is understandably undergoing some changes since the move and is here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/

Thank you to the community, to our wonderful volunteers, and to all of the artists and theme camps that make this and every regional event so darn special! We cannot do any of this without YOU.

I was wondering if anyone has tried putting a 1" copper plumbing end piece on the end of an alluminum/TI staff? It fits really well, and would be easy to secure in place. I am curious about it. It would protect the dowels from the flame (metal tape wears away at some point) as well as the end of the staff from getting beat up when dropped.

Plus since it adds weight at the very end of the staff it increases centripetal momentum in the most efficient way possible. The further from the center, the less weight you need to produce more swing momentum. I use 8-12" dowel, and have tried staffs with 1/2" by 3" lag bolts and didn't really like it that much.

I am also thinking of putting 2- 4"of wicks to make 8"s of fire, at about a 1-1"2 to 2" thickness. Lots of fire good, especially cause I am 6'4" and end up using staffs that are 65" to 70"s. I almost need the 8" wick.

The only fear is that the copper will for sure conduct a lot of heat, and if it comes in contact with skin it might burn very very quickly. Most of the cap would be under the wick, except for the part over the tip of the staff, and I don't seem to catch myself with that very much, so I think it might be low risk. Though really shitty it is did stay on you for any length.

Any thoughts, feedback? Has anyone tried this or heard of folks trying it?

I'm just starting to make my own staves... and curious what kind of weights should I use at the ends? I have a 3/4'' dowel that I've taped and is ready to play with for practice, but I'm at a loss as to what to add to the ends for weights. Tennis balls seem too light and cheesy. I found a few websites that sold practice staves with rubber weights at the ends, but can't find what they're typically used for, so I can't find where to buy them in bulk.

How to choreograph a routine from scratch will also be discussed. Bring a partner or find one in class.

Intermediate/Advanced Poi II - Ian Smith
This class will concentrate on the simpler things in poi: 2 beat weaves, stalls, pendulums, spinning in together time, same direction. You will learn that because of their simplicity they have the most variation possibilities and some of the variations can be quite difficult.
Intermediate/Advanced Double Staff - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to create a variety of patterns and effects with two staffs by combining many different types of motion into your tricks. Beginning with an understanding of how we can move one staff, we quickly progress to two staff exercises designed to open the doors to what is called "hybrid" technique.

Beginning Double Staves – Jordan Campbell
Learn double staff from the ground up in this class designed for the beginner. After a thorough examination of the myriad ways to manipulate a staff we begin combining techniques to seamlessly integrate a second staff.

Advanced Double Staff - Krissy Humphreys
Explore further into the world of double staff manipulation. This class will focus on isolations, anti-spins, hybrids, and how to add finger spinning into our flow. Previous double staff experience is required.

Hoop

Beginner Hoop – Khan Wong
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of hooping, from the first moves every hooper should learn to the principles of establishing a solid hoop practice. We'll start with the basics: hooping on the waist, walking and turning with the hoop and lifting the hoop off the body and getting it back on. From there, passes around the body, vertical hooping and basic hand-hooping technique will be introduced. The class will move on to shoulder hooping and duck-outs depending on participant ability and interest.

Hoop Technique & Flow – Khan Wong
The focus of this workshop is to expand each hooper's range of motion and control. As such, it will not teach moves (though some will be covered) but will instead cover theory and concepts of movement applied to hoop technique. Special attention will be given to hand and body rolling techniques, isolations, antispin applications and direction changes. Participants should be able to transition easily between at least three different moves (it doesn't matter which ones) to get the most out of the class.

Juggling

Beginning Juggling - Jordan Campbell or Bree Crabtree
In this class you will learn the 3 ball cascade – the fundamental building block of juggling patterns – as well as several variations. Everyone can learn how to juggle and the class will be taught in a very simple, sequential manner to ensure that you come out of the class having learned to juggle, guaranteed.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Noel Yee
The ball moves. The ball doesn't move. Come join us in this introductory class that will teach how you to move the ball through space gracefully and then keep it still in visually engaging ways. Close attention will be paid to beginning balancing, isolations and body rolls. No experience required.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to use the fewest number of the simplest type of prop: one ball. Combining balancing, rolling and spinning to fluidly move a ball across your body, contact juggling will broaden your idea of what juggling can be while deepening your understanding of your relationship with objects.

“Other” Props

Rope Manipulation - Ian Smith
Rope Manipulation… what’s that supposed to mean? It’s everything can do with a jump rope other than jump over it! Poi experience is helpful in this class but not required.

Club Swinging - Poki
Break free from the chains that bind you!
Club swinging bridges the gap between poi and staff -- and will increase you skill in both! You will learn: basic club handling, common poi moves with clubs, odd poi moves with clubs, and some strange looking new club moves.
See you at spinagogue! ~Poki

Beginning Rope Dart – Sam Reese
Learn how to manipulate this most mysterious of props. Half dance half martial arts, rope dart combines beautiful motions with sudden eye catching surprises. Take the first step to mastering this ancient prop.

Beginning Whip Cracking - Mushashi or Elias
Learn to use the loudest, and the most dangerous prop of them all. Safety glasses are required, please try to bring your own, we will have a limited number to loan out. This workshop will teach you the basic cracks and the importance of finesse.

Finally, after about a year of research and testing (and by testing, I mean intentionally breaking staves) I have created a truly user-friendly titanium breakdown staff that is super tough, straight, really well weighted and has no hardware protruding out of the shaft diameter.
The staves are grade 9 titanium with titanium threaded hardware welded into the tube ends. All of the breakdown joints are threaded 8 mm hardware with mild steel floating threaded rod to connect them.
What I have accomplished is a staff system that can be customized to any specifications... length overall, length broken down, wick configurations and (soon) LED ends.
As an example I am working on a set right now that consists of two 17" center shafts, intermediate shafts for 3-1/2 foot doubles, intermediate shafts for a 5 foot contact staff, four 6" practice wick ends and four 6" burn wick ends. Every piece of this is interchangeable and fits in a 20 " case. This is just an example of a system that someone contacted me about a while ago that illustrates the possibilities of custom configurations. Anything goes.
I am trying to create a one-package system for all needs of travel related staff systems. If 3 or 4 or 5 staff configurations all fit in one case that can be as short as 20" it should save a ton of trouble...
The connection points are super stable and as simple as threading two pieces together. They don't rattle or wear out and they stay straight.
Right now I am working in 5/8" x .049" wall tubing which is really low-bounce and has a weight that is good for spinning and contact both. I will be looking into some larger diameter shafts as well, but this will take a little time.
COST??? It's titanium so it's a bit expensive... Breakdowns range from $200.00 to $600.00 depending on how custom it gets. The system mentioned above is an example of the upper price range but it is three full staves and extra ends.
Anyway, what I am looking for is FEEDBACK! I would love to hear some opinions. I know they are pricey, but... In any case the feedback is highly appreciated.
Thanks, Michael

I started spinning counterclockwise , picking up and practicing the first few tricks over the last 5 monthss, like rotors, 8s, behind the back... the simple stuff.
Now I've discovered this tribe, as well as the cool online tutorials.
But everyone in the videos is spinning clockwise(CW), whereas somehow I taught myself CCW spinning. I've been able to translate most of what I see, but there are things like finger spins, that must be CW for the thumb control.
So!
Should I relearn staff spinning completely, switching from CCW to CW?
Should I stick with CCW, and only go CW for the finger spins?
Am I overthinking it? Does it matter?\
What would you do?

Currently we are waiting on the cost recovery numbers from the BLM and costs from Lincoln County on top of those. Once we have all of that we will be able to produce a working budget and price the tickets logically (who knew?).

We will then announce the start of ticket sales. The tickets are printed and boy are they purty! It’s been somewhat quiet around here at DS HQ the past few months but rest assured that the hamsters are working overtime on this year’s event. We have much to announce, we have much to discuss, we have many needs from you the community as well. This is just a short note to let you know that the dates and location have been set.
June 19-22, 2008 and yes it will be on Delamar Lake in Lincoln County.

Inspired the Antti/Ima (A.I.) Staff Juggling Project, I think it's time for a Global Contact Staff Video!

Rules:
1) it's gotta be CONTACT!
2) you can use any number of staffs.
3) fire is okay, practise in daylight is better!
4) it's gotta be cool, new, funny, dancey or smoooooth. (Or just a kick ass combo.)
5) use your environment!

So maybe you can do an old-school move REALLLY well, film it, send it to me.
Or you have something nobody else can do, totally new, or just a small variation on something else that you haven't seen online before. Send it in.
Something funny... or dancey? Send it.
Some outrageously long contact combo? Send it!

Or just send all the stuff you want to show off to the world.

PM me for details where to send miniDV tapes, or DVD's of raw footage. If you wanna use the internet to send files, I can recommend large file uploaders, and zero compression on your movie.

If you don't have a video camera, beg, buy or borrow one.

If you have some kind of tiny handheld camera / mobile phone / photo camera that takes video, then fine... just make sure it can output raw movies to at least 320 by 240. And it must be in a brightly lit environment.

Deadline:

2 Months from now: 1st December.

Then it should be out for Christmas!

I'm particularly interested in aluminum and titanium. I've called around and it seems alot of metal suppliers think I'm crazy trying to order 10-20 ft of tubing. Many won't even return my calls.

Or, if you have online resources I'll take those as well. Also, which grades/sizes do you generally use?

Though it's not finished yet (moving and lost my workspace) I've been playing around with a floating end to attach my wicks to. Originally I was trying to figure a way of making removeable/interchangeable wicks, but I had a hard time making it stable. Basically I'm "floating" a section of fence post on the end of my staff and then wrapping the wick around that. So basically there's just under an inch between the actual staff and metal holding the wick. (think concentric cylinders, kinda looks like: (-o-) if the outer part went all the way around and there were two more lines perpendicular to the other lines to keep it stable..and no, that is not Darth Vader's TIE fighter).

This does a few things:

1. Gives the end a lot more weight
2. Gives the outer edge a larger radius with less wick
3. Allows for airflow both over and under the wick (exacerbated by drilling holes in the outer metal cylinder).

I was basically trying to cheat stability for a contact staff because I was using metal conduit and wanted to distribute the weight to the ends. My first go was pretty good actually, but because the heads weren't totally centered, there was a little bit of wobble (though almost negligible). The other issue is that it's UGLY!!! I could kinda care less because you won't notice it when it's on fire, but I'm all for elegant design.

Currently I'm just attaching the outer cylinder to the staff using bolts that are perpendicular and offset an inch or so. But attaching the wick is a little tricky because I can't attach it to a dowel with a screw. Maybe I'll just use another bolt/nut combo on the inside of the outer cylinder, but getting it through the wick is tricky too.

Anyone every tried anything like this before? I'm looking for a brainstorm on attachment/centering ideas.

So, I am planning on doing this again this year. So I can have a little more fun with it, I was hoping a few people might be interested in helping with pre construction off the playa and with teaching/assisting people during the session while they are making their staff (Michael and I had a line of people waiting to ask questions most of the day). Of course any/all material/monetary assistance would not be turned down (preference on the material- wick- 18 staff wicks costs a fair amount). Having experienced staffers there to teach some moves was nice to have and would be great to have happen again this year.

Looks like last year the session was on Tuesday from 1-3 (people were in my camp making their staff until 6pm). I think that is a great time to do it.
Here is last years post (explains the material I use and other info http://firestaff.tribe.net/thread/56a1a85c-9c6c-47ce-87e8-00217aa18f06

Also, I would love to have a fire jam specifically aimed at the newbies who are just starting with firestaff (and other stuff too I guess- damn poi people!) Maybe on Weds night (give them a day to learn some moves)? Maybe have the newbies perform first/head of line privilege and then let other fire artists perform. Anyone interested in hosting this? We might be able to do it at my camp but I am not sure about our sound system and such. Comments? Let me know. Captain Salamander

Chains is a formidable opponent and I wish him the best of luck (as he will need it).

I never have, and I've been spinning for 2 years now. I think part of that is that I mix up not just my rhythm, but my grips as well.

What are some ways that holding the staff differently has altered your spinning style and opened up new moves and transitions? I have tons of them, but I'll just start with one for the purposes of an open dialogue.

The obvious one: off center. You grab the staff around where the grip ends. I like this grip because you can set your elbow at the midpoint and do alot of cool three beat weaves, and you can also make huge circles behind your back effortlessly.

Any other interesting ways of holding the staff people can think of?

Is there a place you guys can buy your staffs or do you have to make them? I'm betting theres no instruction vids available, but figure once I get the staff I can practice unlit first then try lighting up later ;) I still have one of my 5ft poles from high school and have played with it alot, I used 6ft poles more but figure I'll need the shorter size since I'm 5'3". Any good vids for basic fire spinning safety then since I'm new to fire dancing? :D

anyone know if it's been tried before? i think i have a fairly decent plan, i just need to cruise the home depot and see what pipe/fittings are available that i could use for this.

i'm planning on a base staff of probablly 3/4" pipe, material TBD, and somehow at the ends, connect 4-6" length of pipe with about 1" inner diameter. (I got el-wire with the smallest battery pack available and plan in putting it in there, with foam around it for cushioning.) then, the wire wraps around with clear electrical tape. different color for each end (also for even weight hehe) and i HOPE to make it sectional so that i can break it down to 2 pieces for flying to burning man with it....

so i need to explore materials, joints, reducers, and just see what is possible with minimal tool work. (i have a handy step father, however he likes to take over projects and won't let me do anything myself if i get him involved!)
